JustPeace Labs (JPL) is a 501(c)(3) organization based in San Francisco and Barcelona that provides ethical tech and guidelines for the ethical use of tech in complex settings (those with a history of violent conflict, human rights abuse or extreme poverty). JPL is dedicated to ensuring that new technologies are not utilized for repression and do not give rise to a resurgence of violent conflict in these high-risk areas.

Are you interested in learning how you can make make technology more ethical and advance efforts for peace and human rights around the globe? Join our team as a Research & Advocacy Intern!

The Technology in Conflict Initiative

The world is only now beginning to recognize and understand the potentially devastating impact internet and communications technology (ICT) can have in conflict-sensitive settings. From incitement of violence and the amplification of hate speech on social media to security risks associated with the failure to protect personal data, Silicon Valley’s tech giants now find themselves in the crosshairs of a global policy debate as to who is responsible for ensuring technology does not violate human rights or conflagrate conflict. And so far company responses to the negative impacts of their technology have been late, reactionary and insufficient.

In response to this, JPL has launched the Technology in Conflict Initiative (TICI), a new programmatic area focused on ensuring that the technology of today does not contribute to tomorrow’s conflicts.

TICI works to promote responsible technology and convince industry leaders that their products should be used to protect rights and build peace. TICI employs a private sector approach to bring about simple but significant changes in ICT company policy that ultimately serve both beneficiary communities and the corporate bottom line. It does this by combining ethics and human rights frameworks, with a hands-on approach to public/private collaboration and partnership.

Research and Advocacy Internship

The TICI Research and Advocacy Internship offers qualified applicants an exciting opportunity to contribute to the strategic direction of JPL’s advocacy and awareness work and to learn how to grow the organization’s online presence and stakeholder reach. The intern will also be part of finalizing and implementing the organization’s communication strategy and developing TICI messaging. Specifically, the position will entail drafting and editing blog posts, social media content and contributions to white papers, and will provide writing support in line with JPL’s fundraising strategy, as needed. In addition, the intern will have the opportunity to contribute to research on related issues, depending on her or his areas of interest and experience (e.g., law, policy, business, etc.).
